New finds, new history: William Ellison and South Carolina's free people of color : for the 49th annual meeting of the University South Caroliniana Society, on May 24, 1985 / James L Roark.

Text of address delivered to the University of South Caroliniana Society by James L. Roark, re the importance of libraries and scholarship, and his efforts to research the story of a free man of color, William Ellison (1790-1861), a planter of Stateburg in Sumter District, S.C.; born enslaved with name April Ellison in in 1790, he was emancipated in 1816, and legally changed his name to William Ellison on 20 June 1820. In addition to biographical information on Ellison and his family, Roark briefly discusses his time at South Caroliniana Library in researching his book about Ellison called, Black Masters: A Free Family of Color in the Old South, and the contributions of historian U.B. Phillips and others who began research into the history of the American South.
